About this landmark

Vrbas River

The Vrbas is one of the most beautiful rivers of BiH, recognisable by its blue-green, crystal-clear water. It springs on Mount Vranica and flows into the Sava in the north, changing character on the way – from a wild mountain river with rapids and falls, through a grand canyon, to a calm lowland river. Its loveliest stretch is the canyon between Jajce and Banja Luka, protected since 1955, full of rapids, cascades, beaches and steep cliffs over which falcons and eagles circle.

The Vrbas is also an angler's paradise, known for noble salmonids: huchen, grayling and brown trout. Above all, though, this is a river of adventure: some thirty kilometres of it form a world-famous rafting destination that has hosted world championships. The largest city on the Vrbas is Banja Luka, for which the river is a true symbol, while the traditional dajak boat gives it a special stamp.
