About this landmark

Vyosa

The Vjosa River is one of the most important natural rivers in Europe, known for its uninterrupted free flow from its source in the Pindus Mountains in Greece to the Adriatic Sea in Albania, with a length of about 272 km. It represents one of the most intact river systems on the continent, creating a unique mosaic of habitats such as canyons, branching channels, coastal forests, lagoon areas and the Narta delta, which support a rich biodiversity of over 1,600 plant and animal species. In addition to its ecological values, the river has great socio-economic importance for local communities for agriculture, livestock, fishing and nature-based tourism.

In 2025, the Vjosa Valley was officially included in the UNESCO Network of Biosphere Reserves under the “Man and the Biosphere” program, recognizing its ecological importance and aiming to improve the sustainable management of this unique ecosystem at the international level. This global status emphasizes the exceptional natural values of the area and the commitment to protecting its habitats, balancing nature protection with the sustainable development of the communities living along the river.
