About this landmark
The Museum of Literature and Theatre Arts of BiH was founded in 1961 as the Museum of Literature, and in 1970 it expanded its activities to theatre arts. It is located in the heart of Sarajevo, in a mid-19th-century house, a first-category monument, originally owned by the Skarić family and later by the Despić family.
The façade is adorned with a relief of stylized birds drinking water from a fountain, the work of Iva Despić, the first academic sculptress in BiH and the former owner of the house; a replica of the relief is now the museum’s logo. The collection is arranged in 67 literary and 17 theatre collections, with over 20,000 exhibits. The permanent exhibition, renovated for the 55th anniversary, presents exhibits from ten writers and nine theatre artists, along with a brief history of theatre in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the Study Room of Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević and the Bosnian Room of Petar Kočić, Hasan Kikić and Isak Samokovlija. Since 1992, the ground floor has housed the Mak Gallery exhibition space.
