About this landmark

Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kozarac

Near Prijedor, right at the entrance to Kozara National Park, lies one of the more romantic places in Bosnia and Herzegovina – the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, better known locally as Mehmedova church.

Built on "Hill of Love," this church preserves the memory of a forbidden romance from the late 19th century between Austrian woman Marija and local worker Mehmed. Their story, born amid the reconstruction of Prijedor after the great fire, grew into a legend that has attracted lovers for more than a century.

Surrounded by the untouched nature of the "Stara pilana" picnic area, the church is not only a religious building, but also a monument to sincere emotion. Visit this hidden gem and feel the spirit of a time when love defied all boundaries.
