About this landmark

Atik Mosque

Atik Mosque, the oldest in Bijeljina, represents an indelible trace of history and a symbol of survival through the centuries. Built between 1520 and 1566 under the patronage of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, after whom it is named the Imperial Mosque, this building bears witness to turbulent times. Interestingly, during the Turkish-Austrian War it served as a defensive bastion, and in the period from 1718 to 1739 it was converted into a Catholic church, only to return to its original function after the Treaty of Belgrade.

Throughout history it has been restored several times, and in 1912 its minaret received a second šerefe and a height that dominates the surroundings. Next to the mosque there once stood an old cemetery, the rare remains of which are still visible today on the southern side of the courtyard. Although it was completely demolished in 1993, its foundations saw the light of day again in 2003, marking the beginning of a new era for this building, which is today declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As the heart of the old Bijeljina bazaar, Atik Mosque is not only a religious building, but also an authentic cultural monument that tells the story of changing empires, architectural development, and the indomitable spirit of the city.
